EasyJet To Open First African Base In Marrakech

EasyJet will open its first base in Africa in 2026, establishing a three-aircraft operation at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) as part of a long-term partnership with the Moroccan National Tourism Office.

The new base will support the LCC’s largest expansion in Morocco to date, with the airline projecting a record 4 million seats to and from the country annually.

“There is no doubt Morocco is a key market for easyJet: We are the largest carrier to Morocco from the UK and from Switzerland, Morocco is our fastest-growing market outside Europe and a major destination for our easyJet holidays customers,” easyJet CEO Kenton Jarvis says. “With this new development and the launch of our base in Marrakech, we will expand our leisure and business offer to Morocco from more destinations across Europe than ever before.”

The carrier has also announced four new routes beginning in 2026: Hamburg, Lille and Strasbourg to Marrakech, and Geneva to Tangier. These additions bring easyJet’s total number of Moroccan routes to 46. According to the airline, frequencies on several existing routes will also increase next year.

From Marrakech, easyJet will serve 24 destinations across Europe, building on its existing operations at five Moroccan airports—Marrakech, Agadir, Rabat, Essaouira and Tangier. The airline began serving Morocco in 2006 and has flown around 20 million passengers to and from the country since then.

OAG Schedules Analyser data shows easyJet holds a 20.3% capacity share at RAK during the summer 2025 season, second only to Ryanair’s 32.7%. The carrier offered around 670,000 departure seats from the city during the period, flying from 21 destinations including London Gatwick, Geneva and Milan Malpensa.

EasyJet’s expansion comes amid rising competition in Morocco, as a growing number of international airlines target the North African market’s growing demand for both leisure and business travel.

Delta Air Lines will begin its first-ever Morocco service on Oct. 25, with a 3X-weekly Atlanta-Marrakech route using Boeing 767-400ER aircraft, marking the return of direct connectivity between Morocco and the U.S. East Coast.

Europe’s leisure and low-cost operators are also adding capacity. Jet2.com recently began 2X-weekly flights from Newcastle to Marrakech, becoming the sole carrier on the route. Royal Air Maroc has added a Marrakech-Toulouse service operated by 737-8s, while LOT Polish Airlines will enter the Warsaw-Marrakech market on Oct. 29 with two flights per week.

Additionally, Germany’s Eurowings plans to expand in Morocco this winter, with new routes from multiple cities including Hanover, Salzburg, Stuttgart and Prague.
